Ministry of Long-Term Care Enhanced Masking Update

Effective March 5, 2024

Staff, students, support workers, and volunteers:

  • Masks are required based on a point-of-care risk assessment (PCRA) before every resident interaction.
  • Masks are required based on the return-to-work protocols following Covid-19 infection.
  • Staff may consider wearing a mask during prolonged direct resident care defined as one-on-one within 2 meters of an individual for 1 minutes or longer.
  • Staff may continue to wear a mask beyond the minimum requirements if they prefer to do so.

Visitors and caregivers:

  • Masks are recommended, but not required, in all areas of the home.

    Residents in Shared Rooms:

  • If a resident in a shared room is uncomfortable with others removing their mask, homes are encouraged to designate a space to enable the roommate to have visitors without masking.

In outbreak situations, or if a resident is on Additional Precautions:

  • All individuals are required to comply with masking and other personal protective equipment requirements as directed by the outbreak management team and the local public health unit.
  • Residents will be monitored twice daily for infection.

Return to work following Covid-19 &/or other infections:

  • When symptomatic, do not come to work, call into work and speak to the charge nurse on duty for directions.
  • Staff must call in symptoms daily by 1000 am.
  • Inform the charge nurse once fever free x 24hrs with improving symptoms, if enteric (fever free x 24hrs and 48hrs from last episode of vomiting &/or diarrhea).
